One of the characters of that particular colliery was the medical man, a man called Dr O'Ryan who believe it or not saved many, many peoples lives by going down to the actual face. Back in 1930's, and 1940's, before it was nationalised the coal was held up by pit props and the times without number my father alone: I remember as a child six times him coming home with his back caved in, his legs caved in, and Dr O'Ryan, the old grandfather used to actually go down the pit and get people out.
