When mother baked her bread on a morning as she did three times a week, as fast as mother baked the bread and put it by the fire, which was the only method of heat, there was not such things as stoves in those days and as the bread rose and inevitably the wind would blow the soot down the chimney all over the bread and cover it with soot. So in 1937 my mother regard it as time is enough. I've had 10 years of this and she moved to Huyton Quarry to get away from the soot.
