Alphabet stone, Memorial and Church

Ref. No.: WFN59
Date of Photo: 1998.

In the foreground stands the Alphabet Stone previously a door lintel from the old Town Hall building. This 18th Century sandstone block contains the letters of the alphabet (minus the 'J' which was not in use at that time) and was used to test literacy. Behind the gates stands Prescot War Memorial which originally stood in Church Street and was erected in 1916 during the Great War. Prescot Parish Church of St. Mary dominates the remainder of the photograph.
