The firm began as the British Insulated Wire Company (B.I.W.C.) in 1890 but amalgamated with the Telegraph Manufacturing Company Limited of Helsby, Cheshire, in 1902 and became the British Insulated and Helsby Cables Limited (B.I.H.C.).

A further change of name took place in 1925 to the British Insulated Cables Ltd. (B.I.C.). Today, the company is known by the more familiar name of British Insulated Callenders Cables or B.I.C.C. which it obtained after the merger with the Callenders Cables and Construction Company Limited in 1945.
