At the end of the war, there was a severe housing shortage. German P.O.W.'s were used to help in the building of pre-fabricated houses. The photograph shows German prisoners constructing drains for the 'pre-fab' houses in South Avenue, Prescot.
In civilian life these men covered a selection of professions and skilled trades. During the time they were in Prescot, they made toys for the local children, which they bartered with the housewives from South Avenue for apple pies, jam tarts and chocolate.
