Edward George Villiers, 17th Earl of Derby, who in 1915 was made Director of Recruiting for the Army, pictured at Knowsley Hall at the head of the first Liverpool 'Pals' battalion he helped to recruit:- 17th Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment. The idea he developed, for friends and workmates to enlist then serve together in the same regiment, turned out to be so popular that four Liverpool 'Pals' battalions were raised (17th, 18th, 19th and 20th Battalions, also known as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th City Battalions). The idea caught on around the country and similar battalions were raised in other regiments.
