Edward was the eldest son of the 14th Earl. He was very much in his father's shadow following in his footsteps by becoming an MP (for Kings Lynn). In 1852 he was appointed Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in his father's first administration.
He became Secretary of State for India in 1858 and during his father's third administration was appointed Foreign Secretary between 1866-1868, holding the same post under Disraeli in 1874. In 1880, he joined the Liberals and under Gladstone was employed as Secretary of State for the Colonies (between 1882-1885). He married Mary Catherine Sackville-West in 1870, shortly after succeeding to the Peerage upon his father's death in 1869. He died on 21st April 1893.
