James, 10th Earl of Derby

Ref. No.: KN59
Date of Photo: 1702.

James, served under William III in Flanders and was groom of the bedchamber between 1698-1702. He was a sword bearer at the coronation of Queen Anne (1702) and George I (1714) and was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster between 1706-1710. He married Mary, the daughter of Sir William Morley, but outlived his heirs. When he died in 1735 the estates went to his father's (the 8th Earl ) sister. Finding a male heir for the title of Earl, proved to be a lot harder but eventually, the line was traced back through George, the younger brother of the 2nd Earl.
