Charlotte de la Tremouille, Countess of Derby was married to James 7th Earl of Derby. Charlotte was the grand daughter of William, Prince of Orange. She was only 24 when she married and James was 20. The newly weds arrived from France in 1626 at the beginning of the uprising against Charles I.
The couple lived at Court for 9 years and then in 1635 settled at Lathom House, Lancashire. Lady Charlotte successfully defended Lathom House, which was besieged for four months whilst her husband James was in the Isle of Man rounding up an army to defend the Island against possible attack by Roundheads.
