In 1940 an internment camp was set up in Huyton using streets of unoccupied council houses. As a security measure, German and Austrian nationals were brought here as internees. These included many intellectual and artistic refugees, who conducted lectures to pass the time. Due to this, the camp became known as Huyton University. This photograph shows one of the streets with gatherings of internees.
